As I was slowly recovering from giving birth, a couple weeks later a clogged milk duct seemed to strike with a vengeance and traumatize me with pain all over again.
As a first time mother, breastfeeding was not initially easy and I could not believe I would be in pain from it especially after the “trauma” of birth. I thought all the pain would’ve ended after giving birth, but I was dreaming. Really dreaming …
I was unprepared for clogged milk ducts and nipple blisters, but it does happen. Don’t panic like I did, but try your best to get it out.
Here are some things that worked for me:
1. Try to massage the hard lump out/soften it
2. Take a warm shower and massage the affected area
3. Breastfeed to get the milk duct to unclog (high recommended)
4. Use a warm towel or heat pack to ease pain
It may be extremely painful, but after using warmth, massage, and breastfeeding, the clog will hopefully loosen up and clear. If you see a white dot on your nipple afterward, you may have a nipple blister which will need to be taken care of as well.
However, if it doesn’t clear and turns into an infection (mastitis), seek help immediately!
Have any of you experienced this before? If so, what helped you relieve the pain and clear the duct?
(Note: I’m not a medical professional. Please seek help if you feel ill from a clogged duct and need assistance).
